Damage and fracture evolution in brittle materials by shape optimization methods

چکیده
We present a numerical implementation of the Francfort-Marigo model of damage evolution in brittle materials. This quasi-static model is based, at each time step, on the minimization of a total energy which is the sum of an elastic energy and a Griffith-type dissipated energy. Such a minimization is carried over all geometric mixtures of the two, healthy and damaged, elastic phases, respecting an irreversibility constraint. Numerically, we consider a situation where two well-separated phases coexist, and model their interface by a level set function that is transported according to the shape derivative of the minimized total energy. In the context of interface variations and using a steepest descent algorithm, we compute local minimizers of this quasi-static damage model. We observe numerically that, when the damaged phase is very weak, our method is able to predict crack propagation, including kinking and branching.

Mesoscale analysis of failure in quasi‐brittle materials: comparison between lattice model and acoustic emission data
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the development and the evolution of the fracture process zone during fracture and damage in quasi-brittle materials. A model taking into account the material details at the mesoscale is used to describe the failure process at the scale of the heterogeneities. This model is used to compute histograms of the relative distances between damaged points. These...
متن کاملTHERMAL SHOCK OF REFRACTORIES
Being brittle and having low thermal conductivity, refractories suffer damage and sometimes fail in service as a result of thermal shock. While the approach of those making fine-grained technical ceramics is to make their products sufficiently strong to withstand thermal stresses the refractory technologist is more cunning. He uses, often little known, devices to provide resistance to thermal s...
متن کاملA damage-tolerant glass.
Owing to a lack of microstructure, glassy materials are inherently strong but brittle, and often demonstrate extreme sensitivity to flaws. Accordingly, their macroscopic failure is often not initiated by plastic yielding, and almost always terminated by brittle fracture. Unlike conventional brittle glasses, metallic glasses are generally capable of limited plastic yielding by shear-band sliding...
متن کاملNumerical investigation of dynamic brittle fracture via gradient damage models
Background: Gradient damage models can be acknowledged as a unified framework of dynamic brittle fracture. As a phase-field approach to fracture, they are gaining popularity over the last few years in the computational mechanics community. This paper concentrates on a better understanding of these models. We will highlight their properties during the initiation and propagation phases of defect ...
متن کاملDamage-cluster distributions and size effect on strength in compressive failure.
We investigate compressive failure of heterogeneous materials on the basis of a continuous progressive-damage model. The model explicitly accounts for tensile and shear local damage and reproduces the main features of compressive failure of brittle materials like rocks or ice. We show that the size distribution of damage clusters, as well as the evolution of an order parameter--the size of the ...
